{"id":2793,"date":"2025-10-22T18:50:39","date_gmt":"2025-10-22T18:50:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/knitivity.com\/?p=2793"},"modified":"2025-10-22T18:50:39","modified_gmt":"2025-10-22T18:50:39","slug":"starting-new-socks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/knitivity.com\/index.php\/2025\/10\/22\/starting-new-socks\/","title":{"rendered":"Starting New Socks!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday I posted a video on YouTube about knitting up some more socks, so that seems a fairly good place to start documenting the process.\u00a0 Right up-front I apologize for my raspy voice.\u00a0 I had a heck of a time just getting my video creator software (VideoPad from NCH) to work right and select the right microphone.\u00a0 And then it seems it was not positioned the right way on my shirt.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll work on it.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KALmLp41XW8?si=omqk_Cyz49wUODpE\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Today I have balled up the undyed and the chocolate-y yarns into center pull balls.\u00a0 \u00a0I was thinking I could work off both ends of the center pull balls, but then I remember\u00a0 how scrambled the yarns got the last time I tried to do something like this.\u00a0 So I first pulled each skein onto the ball-winder, then put the new ball on the digital scale and reballed two roughly two-ounce balls from each original 4.3 ounce ball.<\/p>\n<p>So now I have enough balls to start the process.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/knitivity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Socks2025-yarnballs1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2795\" src=\"https:\/\/knitivity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Socks2025-yarnballs1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/knitivity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Socks2025-yarnballs1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/knitivity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Socks2025-yarnballs1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/knitivity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Socks2025-yarnballs1-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a>This afternoon, I&#8217;ll do a Turkish cast-on to start the toes and the toe bands to separate toe knitting from the sole\/instep knitting.\u00a0 Once I get the toe bands done, I&#8217;m going to come back here and invite all y&#8217;all to select the next yarn (from the <a href=\"https:\/\/knitivity.com\/index.php\/blog-reader-specials\/\"><strong>Blog Reader Specials page<\/strong><\/a>) to use to start the sole\/instep section.\u00a0 I intend to have several different yarns incorporated in this pair of socks, and they might not match, so it is okay to recommend 3 or 4 colors to get me up to the heel.\u00a0 There will be a dark band before and after the heel stitches, which will match the toe.\u00a0 Each color selection will be separated by a band of the darker contrast.<\/p>\n<p>I do 14 wraps to start the Turkish cast-on, knit 1 round plain just to capture and secure the cast on, then work an increase at each end of each even-numbered row until there are 36 stitches on the front and back needle for each foot.\u00a0 That will make 72 stitches around for each sock, which will ultimately result in 18 ribs up the leg.\u00a0 I generally start the leg about an inch or so above the heel stitching.<\/p>\n<p>UPS tells me my new yarn should arrive tomorrow but I should be able to get the toes and toe bands done by then.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll try to remember to get\u00a0 a picture of my progress by tomorrow evening. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>Wish me luck, okay?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday I posted a video on YouTube about knitting up some more socks, so that seems a fairly good place to start documenting the process.\u00a0 Right up-front I apologize for my raspy voice.\u00a0 I had a heck of a time just getting my video creator software (VideoPad from NCH) to work right and select the &hellip;
